If you've started shopping for cabinets, you've probably run into the terms framed and frameless — sometimes called "American" and "European" construction. It sounds like industry jargon, but the difference is real and it affects how your kitchen looks, how much fits inside, and how easily you can reach it. Here's the plain-English version.

Framed cabinets (traditional / American)

A framed cabinet has a face frame — a flat wood frame attached to the front edges of the box, like a picture frame around the opening. The doors and drawers mount to that frame. This is the classic construction most people grew up with.

Strengths:

  • A traditional, timeless look — especially with inset or partial-overlay doors
  • The frame adds rigidity to the box
  • Familiar and widely available

Trade-offs: the frame slightly narrows the opening, so you lose a little usable width, and the frame edges can get in the way when you're reaching into the cabinet.

Frameless cabinets (European)

A frameless cabinet skips the face frame entirely. The doors mount directly to the sides of the box, which is why this style is also called "full-access." It's the construction behind most modern, sleek kitchens.

Strengths:

  • Full access — no center frame to reach around, so drawers and pull-outs use the entire width
  • A little more storage — without the frame, the openings are wider
  • Clean, modern look — paired with full-overlay doors, you get that seamless, contemporary face

Trade-offs: frameless construction depends entirely on the quality of the box, since there's no frame to lean on. That's exactly why box thickness matters so much — we build on full 3/4-inch boxes so a frameless cabinet stays rock-solid and square for the long haul.

Which one is right for your kitchen?

  • Love a clean, modern, minimal look? Frameless with full-overlay doors is the way there.
  • Want a classic, traditional feel with inset doors? Framed construction shines.
  • Prioritizing maximum storage and easy access? Frameless gives you the edge.
